Walter Spies Biography

Walter Spies
(1895-1942)

Arriving in Bali in 1925, he was influential in introducing Western aesthetic ideas on perspective and new painting materials to local artists. He stimulated contact with Balinese artists by establishing the Pita Maha Artists’ Association in Ubud in 1936 to promote and maintain the quality of art. He was also a gifted musician and took great interest in Balinese music and dance. Most of his highly mystical works of Bali are in private European collections.
